The Rev'd Chris Keast
Assistant Curate with responsibility for Holy Trinity Sebastopol
Fr Chris was ordained a Priest for the Diocese of Ballarat in July 2017, having already served six months in the Parish as a Deacon. Before arriving in the Parish, Fr Chris previously served as a Maritime Warfare Officer in the Royal Australian Navy for 13 years with his last posting being to Sydney, where he also served at St Alban’s and St Aiden’s in Epping. Initially as a lay assistant before being ordained as a Deacon by Bishop Garry Weatherill in June 2016, then continuing as voluntary minister before moving to Ballarat at the end of 2016. Once moving with his wife and three children they quickly fell in love with the Ballarat region and lifestyle.
The call to ministry took a diverse road for Fr Chris, having already studied at James Cook University, the Australian Defence Force Academy, and the University of Divinity in Melbourne.
Fr Chris spoke about himself:
Holy Trinity is part of my first ministry role, in conjunction with being an Assistant Curate at the Cathedral Church of Christ the King on Lydiard St South. It is a challenge learning to balance the roles of husband, father and priest. I see my role in the community as helping to bring the message of the Gospel in all that I do, while working to meet the needs of the local community. Jesus first of all taught mercy, without mercy we cannot be Christian; the place of love and mercy cannot be lost in the work of the Church.
As a husband and father I understand the challenge of having a young family, I am especially passionate about bring new families into the Church where young voices should be part of our everyday experience and not the exception. Being a Priest is not about the “thou shall not” of past generations and more about meeting people where they are, helping anyone and everyone to have a personal relationship with Jesus, the Scriptures, and the Church; through fostering an environment of openness, acceptance and support.
When I get the opportunity I love going to a good movie (especially Star Wars), relaxing while playing on the computer; or having a tea party with my kids.
